Projects

Kickstart Project

The Kick Start programme is aimed for schools who wish to get instrumental tuition started in their school, with specialist funding from the CCEP. It is designed to get children interested in playing an instrument and build a desire to continue learning after the programme ends. You can choose from a wide range of instruments, and from either 10 x 30 minute lessons, or 5 x 60 minute lessons. Instrument loan is included in the price. Parents will need to hire the instrument - free of charge - should the child wish to continue with tuition at the end of the project.

“Coventry Music has helped me to establish a flourishing instrumental programme as a truly collaborative effort. We now have an orchestra and a string group that recently gave their first performance and this is testament to the hard work and dedication of the service’s teaching staff.”
Daniel Sanford-Casey, Head of Performing Arts, Lyng Hall School

Positive Choices

Positive Choices is an after school creative music making programme ran by Coventry Music funded by Youth Music and West Midlands Police. Running in four different schools across the city Positive Choices allows young people to explore creative music making and develop their skills in various musical elements such as instrumentation, song-writing and music production. Positive Choices focuses on creating original material and encouraging collaborations between young people as well between different schools. Positive Choices proudly works in partnership with various local music and youth organisations such as Studio X, Media Mania, Soundlab-COV and The Tin Music and Arts.

"Our students were encouraged to take a lead role in decision making in terms of content, this made them own their own learning and enabled them to become more independent...this type of bespoke intervention supported our students and built their self-esteem...Having this intervention improved music grades at both Key Stage 3 and 4"
Alison Gallagher, Foxford Secondary School - Positive Choices Project

Memberships

Music Mark

Music Mark is a membership organisation, subject association and charity.  On behalf of its members and the wider sector, Music Mark lobbies for, and champions, a government-supported, high-quality, music education provision for all school-aged children and young people which addresses diversity, equity and inclusion at its core.

There is a fabulous document from Music Mark [https://www.coventrymusichub.co.uk/downloads/file/27/music-education-a-guide-for-governors] which will help you to ask useful questions of school leaders and teachers to improve outcomes in music. In the document Music Mark provides questions that will help you to support and challenge senior and subject leaders about music provision in your school. We follow these questions with a few pointers. We would never suggest that these responses are the ‘correct answers’ but they will guide you on to lines of thinking that will help you to improve your knowledge and understanding of music making in your school.
